(8) About our platform: Introduction to the Universal Websites Service
About our platform--The Trunity Universal Website Service
Trunity Networks Corporation is building a platform and business infrastructure that enables values-conscious people and organizations to connect, collaborate, and create “trusted website networks,” with another shared system called The Digital Universe, governed by policies set by world-renowned experts and honored civic leaders.
This platform was launched into quiet beta on January 15th, 2008. Called the Trunity Universal Website Service (UPS), it is a public internet media system which offers individuals and organizations unprecedented autonomy to build multiple web sites/websites and topics and entire networks of communities on the web for free or without advertising.
NGOs will build and moderate their own community ("social") networks. Scholars and artist will publish their work, teachers and students will use it for class projects. Collectors and museums will build digital archives. Families will build private networks (and public).
Within the website service, using design templates a new web site ("website") and/or web page ("topic") can be produced by a user within a few minutes. The content architecture allows for an infinitely complex hierarchy of “topics”, “subtopics”, and “articles”. As new topics and subtopics are developed, the system automatically populates a "Topic Navigation Tree" on the left side of the website screen to help website visitors find what they’re looking for by browsing--in addition to searching on key words.
Each website AND topic is a complete horizontal content management system. Each portal/topic provides blog services (allowing a website designer to quickly and easily set up and manage a blog, or multiple blogs, at any level of the content hierarchy.) The service provides tools that automate the production of a photo or graphics gallery and annotated hyperlink lists within any website, topic or subtopic. It allows web website developers to set up a membership/registration service for their website, and to manage (preview, accept/reject, edit, approve and publish) articles submitted by website members. It allows website administrators to assign to website members one of four different levels of permission (author, editor, publisher, administrator) regarding content submission, editing and publishing, and web site administration.
In addition, the Trunity platform will (eventually) provide various forms of e-commerce functionality (such as membership/subscription fee transactions, and other sorts of interactive transactions between a website and its members), to be implemented for a website, in an automated or semiautomated way (e.g., using a graphical user interface/menu driven user interface that does not require any writing of code or script.)
Website designers and visitors may upload content including photos, graphics, and audiovisual as well as text files, from their personal computer to the Trunity web server where it will be stored indefinitely and available for display on websites owned and controlled by the provider. In this way media-rich web sites can be developed very rapidly by Trunity website system users.
In summary, the Trunity websites platform is designed to place the revolutionary power of the world-wide web into the hands of any individual or group, at minimal to no cost. Using it one can build fully functional interactive web sites in minutes.
Trunity Networks and the Digital Universe Foundation
The developer of this product, Trunity Networks, is a private company funded with capital from angel investors and foundations. However, its business plan and contractual relationship with investors both stipulate that the ownership of the Universal Website Service shall be transfered to a non-profit organization, the Trunity Foundation, which will buy out the investors as revenue from advertising and subscriptions allow. The transfer of the project into non-for-profit status will serve as a "Diamond Shield" to prevent takeover by any for-profit corporation, and will help to ensure that the mission of the Trunity Foundation is fulfilled.
The Digital Universe
The mission of the Trunity Foundation is to build the "Digital Universe"--a free, public, hierarchical, stewarded repository for all human knowledge. The vision of the Digital Universe is "to organize the sum total of human knowledge and make it available to everyone."
Unlike the Wikipedia --a fast-growing open-source web encyclopedia whose content can be uneven and of uncertain reliability--the Digital Universe recruits content "stewards" who are recognized experts in their fields. The stewards, supervised by a council of stewards, review all Digital Universe content to assure its quality and reliability.
The first public offering of the Digital Universe--the "Earth Website"--was released to the public on April 26, 2007.
Additional websites currently in development are a Cosmos Website (nearing release), a Health Website, and a Human Rights Website. Eventually there will be hundreds or thousands of websites.
