As reported in the New York Times on January 6, 2009, the Bush administration, in a final desperate bid to mitigate its reputation for catastrophic damage to the environment, has created three vast marine reserves, totalling 200,000 square miles, surrounding the Northern Mariana and Line islands chains in the Pacific ocean.
